Trump plans to sharply increase H-1B visa fees; Nvidia's Jensen Huang and OpenAI's Sam Altman respond.
On September 22, according to media reports, Nvidia's Jensen Huang and OpenAI's Sam Altman announced in a media interview that Nvidia will invest $100 billion in OpenAI to support the latter in building data centers worth hundreds of billions of dollars around Nvidia’s AI processors.
In this interview, both CEOs emphasized the importance of attracting top global talent. Jensen Huang stated:
Glad to see the actions President Trump is taking.
Jensen Huang further emphasized:
We need all the smartest talent.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also expressed a positive view on Trump's changes. Altman said:
We need to recruit the nation’s smartest talent. In my view, streamlining the process and providing financial incentives are good things.
Previously, Wallstreetcn reported that the Trump administration announced last Friday plans to raise the H-1B visa application fee to $100,000.
The new policy requires employers to provide proof of payment before applying for H-1B visas for their employees. Unpaid applications will be restricted for 12 months until payment is completed. Those already holding H-1B visas and residing outside the United States do not need to pay to re-enter.
Tech Giants Face Impact
This immigration reform will particularly affect the technology sector, as the industry heavily relies on the H-1B visa.
According to reports, Amazon, Google, and Tesla are among the largest users of H-1B visas.
According to data from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, Amazon received more than 10,000 H-1B visa approvals in 2025, while Microsoft and Meta each received over 5,000 approvals.
These companies mainly use H-1B visas to bring in software engineers, technical project managers, and other IT professionals from countries such as India. Last year, Indian applicants accounted for 71% of visa holders.
Visa holders can work in the U.S. for 3 to 6 years and have the opportunity to apply for a green card for permanent residency.
