WeChat AI is now entering the stage of integrating with the mini program ecosystem.
On June 8, WeChat released the "Guidelines for Developers to Access the WeChat AI Ecosystem," stating that in order to provide users with a more intelligent interactive experience, the WeChat open platform, while fully respecting developers' rights and their autonomy, offers developers convenient access to the WeChat AI ecosystem.
Since 2025, news about WeChat AI has attracted much attention, but Tencent has never disclosed a clear progress timeline.
Wallstreetcn has learned that these guidelines mark an important step for WeChat AI to connect with mini programs and enrich the AI ecosystem.
It is reported that developers need to actively authorize access to WeChat AI in “Mini Program Management Backend – AI Capability”. At the same time, the WeChat open platform offers developers two options to meet the development needs of teams of varying scales.
The first method is Automatic Mode: The platform will read the mini program's source code during submission for review, without needing extra development. Meanwhile, the platform will analyze the developer’s mini program pages so WeChat AI can directly operate them.
The second method is Development Mode: Developers can independently customize development based on their mini program’s business features. After passing platform evaluation and review, it can be called by WeChat AI.
WeChat specifically pointed out that these two modes do not conflict and can be enabled simultaneously. Moreover, if developers disable both modes, WeChat AI will neither recommend nor call the mini program, but this will not affect the mini program’s existing services.
In addition, WeChat also disclosed that WeChat AI is still in the internal testing phase; users cannot experience it yet.
WeChat AI is regarded externally as Tencent’s key differentiated product in this AI race. Since 2025, Tencent's management has repeatedly mentioned plans to build an AI Agent embedded in the WeChat ecosystem, running based on WeChat’s unique ecosystem.
Tencent President Liu Chiping believes WeChat is equipped with five major ecosystems: communication, social, content (public accounts, video channels), mini programs, and payment & business, enabling intelligent agents to understand users’ needs, intentions, and interests, and to accomplish tasks in a closed loop. Such intelligent agents would be "the ideal assistant for users."
As for the launch timeline of WeChat AI, Tencent has never given a clear answer. However, at the financial results briefing in May, Tencent management revealed that the deployment of AI capabilities within the WeChat ecosystem is still proceeding in a progressive manner.
Not long ago, the Financial Times reported that Tencent is accelerating the development of AI agents embedded in WeChat. The project is currently in prototype testing, and there are plans to launch compliance procedures as soon as this month, followed by testing with a small group of external users, and then gradually rolling out online.
