Xiaomi Automobile is aggressively targeting the family primary vehicle market.

On July 8, Xiaomi Automobile's official Weibo released the "SKYNOMAD" poster. The poster doesn’t reveal much—just a new name and the Xiaomi brand logo—but it points to Xiaomi’s next large-sized SUV.

Wall Street Insights has learned that SKYNOMAD is not the previously rumored "Redmi car," but rather a new model following Xiaomi SU7 and YU7. "SKY" refers to the sky, while "NOMAD" symbolizes nomadic freedom.

Xiaomi Group President Lu Weibing mentioned at the quarterly earnings meeting that Xiaomi Automobile will launch a brand-new mid-to-large-size vehicle in the second half of this year.

Wall Street Insights has learned that this vehicle adopts a new design language, with a square and robust appearance, a body length of about 5.2-5.3 meters, falling in the same category as Li Auto L9 and Aito M9. It is expected to focus on the large space, multi-occupant travel market.

This means Xiaomi Automobile's next step is to tap into new users it hasn’t reached before.

The SU7 brought Xiaomi Automobile to the table, relying on speed, design, performance, and the emotional value generated by Lei Jun's personal IP. It's more like a car that makes users eager to express themselves: young, sporty, highly technological, and enough to spark discussion. The YU7 advances these advantages into the SUV market, further strengthening Xiaomi Automobile's label for pure electric, intelligent, and youthful products.

But if SKYNOMAD ultimately points to a large-size, six- or seven-seater, extended-range route family SUV, then Xiaomi faces a very different decision-making chain.

The people Xiaomi needs to persuade have changed.

Products like the SU7 are often expressive purchases by individuals. They like the exterior, recognize the performance, accept the price, and add in brand sentiment, which can prompt an order. But a big family car is different. Typically, it serves as the main household vehicle, a decision involving not just the driver, but also elderly family members, children, spouses, and a higher frequency and more complex range of real-life scenarios.

Drivers want power, intelligent driving, and efficient energy replenishment; passengers want space, comfort, and quiet; elderly and children care about ease of entry/exit, second and third-row experience, and comfort on long journeys; and the household budget must factor in after-sales, resale value, reliability, and long-term use costs.

This is why big family cars have never been a blue ocean. Li Auto and Aito have already deeply educated the market. What they sell isn’t just a “big car,” but package extended-range energy replenishment, smart cabins, assisted driving, refrigerators, TVs, couches, and family travel scenarios into a set of answers easily understood by the whole family.

Now Xiaomi is stepping in, facing a red ocean of already formed user expectations.

The value of the extended-range route lies here, too. Deloitte's 2026 Global Automotive Consumer Study notes demand for pure electric vehicles remains cautious, hybrid attractiveness is rising, and consumers balance price, charging convenience, and everyday practicality. iiMedia’s report on new energy vehicle consumption trends also shows that range and safety remain core concerns when users buy cars.

For family primary vehicle users, technical specs alone aren’t enough. Specs must translate to anxiety-free long distance, effortless energy replenishment, and comfortable seating for the whole family.

Xiaomi needs this car, and that's easy to understand.

The SU7 proved Xiaomi Automobile’s capability to create bestsellers, and the YU7 expanded the product line into the SUV market. But to support higher delivery targets and a more complete product matrix, Xiaomi can’t just stop at more individualistic, performance-focused products.

Entering the large six- and seven-seat family SUV market means higher unit prices, broader user base, and an opportunity for Xiaomi’s phones, appliances, vehicle systems, and ecosystem connectivity to be integrated into more frequent family scenarios.

However, this step won’t be easy.

In the past, Xiaomi was best at creating highly recognizable products and then rapidly penetrating the market through configuration, pricing, channels, and traffic. The family main car also needs technology appeal, but values certainty even more. Is the car stable enough? Can deliveries keep pace? Are there enough after-sales service points? Can long-distance experience stand repeated use? These questions won’t disappear just because of a new name.

So, the importance of SKYNOMAD isn’t that Xiaomi gains a new English name, but that Xiaomi Automobile may be entering a tougher layer of competition.

From SU7 to YU7, Xiaomi convinced people willing to pay for design, performance, and technological sentiment. With SKYNOMAD, Xiaomi may need to convince an entire family.

This is Xiaomi Automobile's next tough battle. It's not about whether it can create another bestseller, but whether it can turn bestseller ability into long-term trust in the family primary vehicle market.
