Meta’s new AI lab delivers its first key models, Zuckerberg’s restructured strategy shows initial results.
Meta Platforms’ Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth revealed on Wednesday that the Meta Superintelligence Lab, founded last year, delivered its first batch of key AI models internally this month, marking the preliminary achievements of CEO Zuckerberg’s AI strategy reorganization.
During a news briefing on the sidelines of the Davos World Economic Forum, Bosworth stated that these models “show tremendous potential” and are “very impressive.” He noted that the team has actually been working for “basically only six months, possibly even less.”
Previously, Meta faced criticism for the poor performance of its Llama 4 model, while competitors like Google seized the lead in the AI race. Zuckerberg then made major changes to the AI leadership, set up a new lab, and attracted top talent with high salaries in an effort to regain an edge in this highly competitive technological frontier. Bosworth emphasized that the technologies aren’t yet finished, but Meta has already begun to see favorable returns from large-scale investments planned for 2025.
2025: "A Year of Extreme Turbulence" — Investment Returns Begin to Show
Media previously reported that Meta is developing a text AI model codenamed Avocado, planned for launch in Q1, as well as an image and video-focused Mango model. However, Bosworth did not specify which models were delivered internally this time.
Bosworth spoke broadly about the AI development cycle, stating that “there’s a lot of work to do after training” before models can be “delivered in ways that are truly usable for both internal teams and consumers.”
Bosworth called 2025 Meta’s “year of extreme turbulence,” as the company builds labs, infrastructure, and acquires computing power. He stated that Meta is now beginning to see favorable returns from these large-scale investments.
He predicts that 2026 and 2027 will be key periods for consumer AI trends to take shape, as recent technological advances have enabled answers to “those questions you ask your family or kids every day,” though technological development can still improve results for more complex inquiries. Therefore, the next two years will be vital for bringing consumer products to market.
Smart Glasses Business Adjustments: Focusing on the U.S. Market
Meta is now promoting its AI-enabled Ray-Ban smart glasses. Earlier this month, the company paused the product’s international expansion to prioritize fulfilling U.S. orders.
Meta’s AI strategy changes are being closely watched by the market, as the company previously faced criticism for the performance of its Llama 4 model, while competitors held an advantage in this transformative and potentially lucrative AI race.
